Affimag magnetic microspheres are prepared by proprietary processes involving either copolymerization of the precursors in the presence of magnetic nanoparticles or encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles on the surface of a core material. Depending on the matrix materials used, they can be classified into magnetic silica, magnetic polystyrene, magnetic urea-formaldehyde resin, and magnetite particles. All of the Affimag magnetic particles are highly uniform in size, spherical in shape and superparamagnetic in nature. These magnetic particles can be retrieved from a suspension by using an external magnetic field, and redispersed back in the solution easily when removed from the magnetic field. They will not retain any significant magnetism even after repeated exposure to strong magnetic fields. These properties make the Affimag magnetic particles ideal for applications in cell separation, protein purification, DNA isolation, and diagnostics.
